Get her mother Gwendolyn to let her relax her hair
Find a boy to ask her out
Get on the Hi-Steppers dance squad
Gia doesn't have the hair or the clothes, but she's got the moves and the attitude to make her sophomore year at Longfellow High unforgettable. But not everyone agrees, so Gia decides it's time for a makeover. With her stylish new look, she scores a date with hottie football player, Romeo, snags a spot on the Hi-Steppers dance squad, and makes a ton of new friends. Gia's on top of the world until things go horribly wrong. Now Gia feels like all she has left is her mom and her faith. That's not going to stop Gia, she's just got to convince the Hi-Steppers and everyone else at school, to follow her lead and step to her beat.

IT IS WHAT IT IS – Book 2
It Is What It Is by Nikki Carter is a fun, hip read with tons of laugh-out-loud moments. Gia is a high-school sophomore who just wants to have fun. But her circle of friends and family is making it such a hard task. For starters, Gia's mother may not have gotten the memo on how not cool bratty step- sisters are. If she had, Gia would not be stuck at Candy's rib cage; Candy dishes out her fair share of sticky situations and dances on Gia's every nerve. And although she is the high steppers co-captain, Gia's problems only get worse. When Valerie, the other co-captain, commandeers Gia to rekindle an old flame between she and Ricky (Gia's BFF), sparks fly when Hope (Gia's cousin) is added to the mix. Yes, she wants him, too! Can you say dilemma? Now Gia must navigate the waves to extinguish all the fires surrounding her.
Nikki Carter penned a realistic and refreshing tale that pulls you into teen angst. The dialogue is funny, the scenes are vivid, and I loved how I could really relate to characters less than half my age. One message that will easily capture its audience is how sacrificing yourself to fit in is not the `bidness.' Messages that will reach audiences revolve around patience, trust, confidence, and honesty. This quick read captures your attention and leaves you craving more with good examples of the highs and lows of friendships, faith, and fun. Pick-up It Is What It Is to be entertained, enlightened, and energized.

IT’S ALL GOOD – Book 3
“Gia and her girls from the Hi-Steppers dance squad are back, and junior year of high school holds such promise. There are big events connected with their support of the football team as well as the possibility of her long-term friendship with Ricky becoming something more. Gia has settled into her new family configuration with her stepfather and stepsister. When her mother and aunt establish a club at church to promote sexual abstinence and expect Gia and her cousin Hope to recruit their friends, however, life gets complicated. The usual relationship drama within their group takes a nasty turn with a ripped-from-the-headlines subplot featuring a mother posing as a teen on a social-networking site. This series improves with each episode. Gia continues to be an engaging, lively teen full of sassy good humor. Other character portrayals are much more complete than in earlier entries, and the story keeps a steady pace as it moves through the school year. Carter portrays a rounded picture of African-American teen life anchored by school, church and family.” (Fiction. 12 & up)
COOL LIKE THAT – Book 4
Let the fireworks begin…
Now that she’s been accepted into a summer enrichment program in New York City, Gia knows she’s going to have the flyest summer ever. Especially since her mom and her annoying stepsister won’t be around. And best of all? Her best friend, Ricky, is joining her so they’re going to spend the entire summer together. Gia hopes Ricky’s finally going to make a move on her, but it seems like Ricky’s bent on playing it safe—too safe, as far as Gia’s concerned. So when Rashad, a cutie from the summer program, starts to get his flirt on with Gia, she’s got a new crush—and Ricky’s so not cool with that.
